Frequently Asked Questions

DRIVERS EDUCATION

How old do I have to be to take drivers education?

  • 15 years old but you have to be 15 and a half to take the permit test.

How long does it take to get your license?

  • After a driver’s education class, you need to get your permit and drive for at least 6 months. In which time you must have driven with a school for 6 hours and received a certificate of completion.

Can I get it sooner?

  • Yes, check with your local D.M.V or call Tomco for these exceptions.

I took Driver’s Education in High School, What do I do now?

  • Now you must sign up with a state accredited driving school like Tomco for your 6 hours behind the wheel training that is required by the state.
  • Remember, even if you took Driver’s education at school, took the permit test and got a learner’s permit- that permit IS NOT VALID until you drive with a certified driving school and obtain a signature from a State certified instructor after driving with them!!! Also, remember driving without this signature is a violation of state law and may result in taking that permit away!!!!

If I’m 18 years old do I have to take anything?

  • No you do not. You may apply for a permit without any documentation of a drivers training course.

What if I’m only 17 and a half years old?

  • Well, you need at least a Driver’s Education Certificate to take the permit test but you will not be aloud to take the Road test until you turn 18 years old. If you want your license before 18 years old, you must complete driver’s education and behind the wheel with a certified driving school.

TRAFFIC SCHOOL

If I’m under 18 years old can I go to an adult traffic school?

  • Yes, but only if the judge allows it. You will need to have a parent signature at time of signing in to your class.

If I’m a truck driver can I attend a traffic school?

  • Yes, you may but only if you got the violation in your personal vehicle. Special reporting is required – let Tomco know when you take your class and you will be informed what is needed for this reporting.

What about taking the online Traffic school class isn’t it easier and more convenient?

  • It is quicker and easier to take a in class 8 hour traffic school than it is taking an online course. First, you must have enough time to wait for the sealed final test to arrive in the mail. Second, you must find a notary to watch you take the test, then pay the notary. Third, mail the notarized copy of the test to the school. Fourth, wait for your certificate before you time to turn it in expires.
  • Recap, pay the online school, pay the notary for notary and possibly a proctor fee.
  • Then, wait for the mail- What could go wrong?

Can I take another traffic school if I already had one within 18 months

  • A judge may order another traffic school within 18 months, but ultimately it is at the discretion of the DMV if the point will be allowed.

If I got a ticket in another state am I eligible to take traffic school in California?

  • Yes, but only if the jurisdiction allows it. Although, most do and will require a special letter, you will be required to obtain permission and then submit the completion to that jurisdiction yourself. Tomco will provide you with a letter of Traffic school completion for an added fee.

If you have any other questions you can either contact your local D.M.V. or call a Tomco representative and we’ll be glad to answer any and all your questions.
